I revised the dorm plan to move the stairs into the pods. This will allow them to be rated by use of shutters and still provide for the natural ventilation. The connectors now act as the stacks pulling air from the three pods which will still have operable windows.

The dorm plans have been revised to maintain seperate sleeping suites with a small common room connecting the entry and bathroom within each apartment.Larger common rooms are abvailable now. These are open to the stairs and atrium spaces.

OK, I am done being unhappy with the stairs. I am moving them out to the north wall. I am going through too many hoops to make them "maybe" work. The stairs are moving!

Tim, your stairs need to settle down. One way or another. I do think the way you are moving this thing forward, the most logical placement of the stairs would be on axis at the east and west extremes, within the volume. The organization of your pods was more playful in your intensive. The direction you are going has to very organized pods at either end and a pod that does mot work as elegantly in the middle. Your circulation spine is currently flipping from north to south along the center axis of the middle pod. I would suggest you split each column into four smaller columns at their current location and move them in all directions to about four feet apart. Instead of a column line your center of the composition would be now a 4’ circulation space. Two dorm rooms or one classroom would then be half the square minus have the circulation space. This basic configuration would appear in every square…

Werner,

See my latest post. I am struggling with the circulation and sawtooth spline. I think the circulation is going to have to follow the sawtooth. I tried earlier in the week to place the stairs at the ends as you suggest but it destroys the first floor studio placement. This new layout solves the ciculation. Let me know your thoughts. I really need them at this point. I don't have much hair left. :)
